Episode 115 is finally here! Bryce and Adan join Carl to discuss the 2014 Warhammer 40k Year in Review. And what a year it was! We had heard late LAST year that Games Workshop was going to be moving even faster than 2013 and we don't see how anyone could have predicted the pace and sheer amount of releases that took place!

We cover every aspect of Warhammer 40k releases, from Games-Workshop, Forge World, Black Library, Fantasy Flight Games and others. So prepare yourself, because this is going to be a long ride.

And just when you think it couldn't get any more incredible, Loopy from Masters of The Forge, and the master of our hearts, joins Carl to announce the winners of the 2014 Hobby Progress challenge!

All of this and the usual Hobby Progress and Games Played segments make for an incredibly long episode. We hope you enjoy it!

Happy Holidays.

In Episode 110 of The Independent Characters we talk about the process of building missions in Warhammer 40k. Whether you want to create (or leverage!) the ultimate 40k Tournament Missions, or make a really exciting and fun narrative mission for your event or friends, this is the episode you want to listen to

We enlist aid from some of the best in the tournament scene at the moment to delve into their different (but somewhat similar) philosophies on mission design and what makes for a balanced experience. Reece Robbins (of The Las Vegas Open and Frontline Gaming) and Mike Brandt (of the NOVA Open and NOVA Open Charitable Foundatin) both join us to give us some insight into how the missions for their respective events were developed.

As usual we have our Hobby Progress and games played, which is quite extensive as we participated in a few events over this period of time!

That's not enough you say!? Ok then - how about we throw in a long interview with none other than Black Library author, and probably secret Chaos agent, Aaron Dembski-Bowden for good measure!? This is an amazing interview with insight into many things Black Library and his latest novel The Talon of Horus (on sale now!) without any spoilers.

Episode 108 - Show of Force: The Greater Good

Episode 108 of The Independent Characters is all about The Tau! We cover it with our patented (not really) Show of Force approach. This time it's Show of Force: The Greater Good. We talk about everything Tau, from the history and details of the race, their reliance on futuristic technology and weaponry. We go inside the background, rules, supplements and excitement of the youngest race in the Warhammer 40k Universe!

We will discuss our experiences playing the Tau and how they perform on the tabletop in comparison to their backstory. To help us through all of this, we have brought in Jason McCurry of our local gaming group. Tau were his first army, and although he isn't actively playing them right now, he helps walk us through the confusion of marker drones, and ethereals!

Additionally, as recommended by Reece Robbins, we have Israel Sanchez to walk us through playing Tau in the competetive environment.

Episode 106 has us barely standing the heat in The Boiler Room. The Air Conditioning at the studio is broken and things get pretty hot. You can tell we start losing our minds. However, before we do we spend some time discussing Hobby Progress and swapping armies.

We also include a discussion Justin and Carl had with Chelle, Carl's wife, about her Eldar (The Chelledar) from Dave Paints. We talk about how she has gotten into 40k, what appeals to her about it, and Justin offers her some advice on playing. This was originally intended to be released as bonus content while Carl was on vacation, but we held on to it until now.

Last but not least, we have a Warrior Lodge segment with Aaron, Bryce and Jason. We discuss our impressions of 7th edition now and talk about specific changes to the game.

Episode 103 - Dataslate: Technology and 40k

Episode 103 is a new format for shows, in which we cover topics that are perhaps not lengthy enough to warrant an episode entirely on their own, but can be strung together into several segments. We refer to these as Dataslate episodes.

In this episode we have a discussion of the use of Technology and 40k. From Facebook, Blogs, to apps and tablets. We discuss how we have used these various pieces to improve our gaming experiences. We then have a short review of Games Workshops Altar of War book.

We follow all of that up with two interviews. One with Dave of Dave Paints. This is the commission painter who has painted Carls wifes Eldar. (The Chelledar) The other interview is with Reece Robbins as we discuss the upcoming Bay Area Open. This has some significant changes and news recently. So if you are interested in going, you aren't going to want to miss this.

Of course we have our usual Hobby Progress in which we have... actual Hobby Progress!

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 102 of The Independent Characters has us returning to our coverage of Horus Heresy 3: Massacre for our second part of the two part coverage.

First Geoff returns to talk about Hobby Progress and games played with Carl. We will see how that has gone. We also touch slightly on 7th Edition here and our initial impressions. But that's not what this show is about...

We spend time discussing the mechanics of the Legions represented in this book as well as an overview of the Titan Legions involved and the Mechanicus forces.

Then we leap over to discuss the two (yes we said two!) different campaign styles of play that are in this book. Anything that has us playing the game in different ways strikes our interest and this is no exception!

Episode 101 of The Independent Characters focuses on Forge Worlds latest release, Horus Heresy 3: Extermination! This is part one of our two part coverage of the latest amazing book, and conclusion of the Istvaan Trilogy.

In this episode, we go into depth about the lore surrounding Horus Heresy 3. This includes what happens immediately after the events of Massacre and other actions that take place in the neighboring systems. We then discuss the four Space Marine Legions represented in this book. Talking about their history, their disposition of forces during the Horus Heresy and some eximplary battles they have taken part in.

Geoff joins Carl for this episode and we will find out if he has completed any hobby progress in the intervening time since Episode 100 as well...

We also have an interview with Justin Tan of Arcane Factories about their Kickstarter project which is halfway through its cycle at the time of this release. For some reason audio quality for calls to Canada really suffers when doing these Skype calls. So we have tried to clean it up as much as possible. Please bear with the audio here as Justin has some information which may be of interest to 40k player, and in particular Sisters of Battle players!

Episode 99 - Show of Force: The Unforgiven

Episode 99 of The Independent Characters focuses on our second "Show of Force" episode. This time we are discussing The Unforgiven. We go into great detail about many aspects of the Dark Angels army and how Games Workshop supports them.

We have taken feedback from our previous Show of Force episode and tried to incorporate some of that into this episode as well. Even taking all of that into account - we realize some things we can do to improve this format even further for the next time!

We want to thank Ken Fritts for joining us for this episode, his knowledge and insight into The Dark Angels was very helpful and we couldn't have done it without him. Additionally, we owe a big thank you to Gav Thorpe, who took time out of his busy schedule (and even put up with our missed appointment quite graciously!) to talk to us about his Legacy of Caliban series, and a look at The Dark Angels through a Black Library authors eyes.

The epsiode starts off with a huge amount of Hobby Progress. Well, since we include purchases in our "Hobby Progress" we think you can see where this may be going...

Either way, we hope you enjoy Episode 99 of The Independent Characters!

I had some time to sit down with Dave Taylor of Dave Taylor Miniatures and discuss his new business as well as spend some time talking to him about his, very different, approach to assembling large Forge World Models!

I think Dave does a great job of de-mystifying these models, and provides some amazing advice.

I really wanted to thank Dave for taking the time to sit down and talk with me at Adepticon. He's a very busy guy!

Please forgive the sound quality here - I did my best to clean it up.

Episode 98 - Adepticon 2014 Preperation

Episode 98 of The Independent Characters has the return of Geoff! At least for this episode anyway...

We spend some time catching up with the former co-host of The Independent Characters, talk a little about the feedback from Episode 97, and then launch into our discussion of Adepticon 2014 and what we are doing to prepare for this magnificent event!

We also take some time to speak with Matt Weeks, one of the primary organizers of Adepticon, before we come full circle and have a conversation with a couple of our friends who will be attending with us this year.

Adepticon is always a lot of fun and we highly encourage you to make the trip out to Chicago at some point if you aren't already.

Not only is this episode slightly delayed, but we also apparently ran into several sound issues. I have done my best to clean them up a bit. Our apologies about that.

We hope you enjoy Episode 98 of The Independent Characters.

Episode 97 - Extreme Forge World Modeling

Episode 97 was supposed to be about how assembling large Forge World models is really not as difficult as you think it might be. However, occasionally a show goes in a direction you didn't expect. What we ended up with is a deep dive into the world of Extreme Model Building!

Tim has a background in assembling model cars and trains, but his love of assembling complicated projects has now moved over into the Forge World arena. He is the individual responsible for the incredible assembly work done on Carls Titan and Thunderhawk.

We thought bringing Tim on the show would show people how they shouldn't be intimidated by these large (and expensive) models, however we didn't quite know what we were in for. We think however, you will find some great ideas in this episode and will gain an appreciation for just how passionate some people are about this hobby!

In addition to our regular Workbench and Tabletop discussion, we also present you with The Warrior Lodge #10. Joining us this time around are Ian (aka Crimson Fist Ian), Jason, and Josh (aka Santa Cruz Josh) to tackle a number of topics we have gathered for you.

Last, but not least, we have a quick interview with Teras of Geek Nation Tours. He comes on to talk about Warhammer World (You might have heard Carl went there) and how he can help you get there soon! Sometimes you have to just sit back and enjoy the journey, not necessarily the destination! We hope you enjoy Episode 97 of The Independent Characters.

Episode 96 - Show of Force: Veterans of The Long War

Episode 96 of The Independent Characters introduces our new special named Show of Force. This Episode Show of Force covers the Veterans of The Long War. We go into depth about the forces of the Chaos Space Marines. From Where they come from, what their objectives are, some of our favorite units, the models, the support from Forge World and Black Library... we attempt to answer the question "Why should you collect this army?".

To help us out we bring in John French, Black Library author of Ahriman: Exile (and the upcoming Ahriman: Sorcerer) to help us understand this complex villain and the nature of Chaos itself. Additionally, we have input from Alan Dehesa, a tournament Chaos Space Marine player who has placed well at some of the most challenging events around, to give us some insight into how he makes this army perform.

We have the usual Workbench and Games Played segments, but of course the real "meat" of this episode is our coverage. This is our first such episode and we are very interested in your feedback before we move into the next one (3 to 4 episodes from now).

Whether you are thinking of having a model or army painted by a commission painter or painting service, or whether you think you have the chops to become a commission painter yourself, we discuss the pitfalls you want to avoid as well as the benefits.

To help us round out our conversation, we also have interviews with Branden from Smells Like Wargaming and Frankie from Frontline Gaming. These are two distinctively different approaches to Commission Painting services and we ask them about how they do business and what others should look for.

As usual, we have our Workbench and Games Played segments where we delve a bit into Tyranids as well.

Next episode we promise to present you with a brand spanking new commercial for Secret Weapon Miniatures as well as Smells Like Wargaming. So finally people can stop teasing Carl about not having recently attended a class by Mr. Justin!

Episode 93 - 2013: The Year In Review

Episode 93 of The Independent Characters has us returning to our annual “Year in Review” episode. And if you thought 2012 was full of Warhammer 40k goodness, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

2013 may go down on record as being the most active, and controversial year for Warhammer 40k ever! Between the multitude of Codex releases, the Forge World Imperial Armour AND Horus Heresy releases, the Black Library books and digital content, there seemed to be no end to the constant outpouring of 40k content!

Some was filled with controversy and others celebrated for their achievement, but no one can argue that we weren’t ALL kept very busy!

In our first episode of 2014, we discuss 2013 as it relates to Warhammer 40k. We have a tremendously large Hobby Progress and Games Played section as well. I want to thank Adan and Justin for joining me on this episode and we welcome your feedback!
