Episode 194 of The Independent Characters is a bit of a train wreck. We aren't going to lie.

When Carl was going to be doing so much traveling in September, we expected that he would be able to fit in a couple of interviews. Justin Hill, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, John French, maybe even Robin Cruddace. However, delayed flights, jetlag, expired Drivers licenses... all kinds of things conspired against him to toss those plans right out the window.

In the end we wound up with a great interview (with mediocre sound quality in Bugman's Bar) with Justin Hill and then an extensive Hobby Progress and rambling intro section with Jody and Carl. This is NOT our strongest showing, but we do think it IS a fun episode. It's just not particularly well structured.

Our next episode will have us back on track and back on schedule. No more traveling and just a lot of gaming. But until then we hope this episode tides you over and you enjoy it as much as we did recording it!

Time Stamps:

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro, Host Introduction, and Elite Choice
  • 0:38:50 - Hobby Progress and Games Played
  • 1:34:50 - Show and Tell: Tactica Imperialis
  • 1:51:45 - Interview with Black Library's Justin Hill
  • 2:23:20 - Final Thoughts and show closing

Episode 193 of The Independent Characters arrives delayed by about two days since Carl had to deal with majore work issues all weekend.

This episode we are discussing how to get some extra life out of all of your old hobby publications. Be they old campaign materials, old codexes, old mission books, or just old anything - we discuss ideas for how you can look at these things at the changing of an edition and still make them useful in your gaming experience!

This episode again comes in at about two and a half hours. We know folks like the longer ones and we have some things coming up which are going to fill your time at great length. But this is a solid two hours of content and discussion... and it will also be of value to how long you get to use all that old stuff you bought.

Carl and Justin are heading off to the NOVA Open after this and the month of September is incredibly busy with travel and other activities, but we will fit in new episodes where we can. Expect a lot of interviews with people in the industry and some other surprises coming up. We hope you enjoy!

Time Stamps:

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro, Host Introduction, and Elite Choice
  • 0:13:30 - Hobby Progress and Games Played
  • 0:46:30 - The Warrior Lodge - LIVE!: Part 1

Episode 192 of The Independent Characters where we run our second ever Warrior Lodge LIVE Episode!

For those worried that Justin and Adan had been fired, you can put those rumors to rest as Adan flies into the area to record and Justin finally DOESN'T have to fly somewhere to teach airbrush classes!

The episode comes in at a much more reasonable two and a half hours - but it's a solid two and half hours featuring some guest callers from our Patreon as well!

We hope you enjoy!

(Edit) I realize I neglected to edit out the portion where we drop network connectivity for live viewers. By the time I realized this it would have required pulling back the episode and just wasn't worth it.

Time Stamps:

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro, Host Introduction, and Hobby Progress
  • 1:06:45 - The Warrior Lodge - LIVE!: Part 1
  • 1:56:30 - The Warrior Lodge - LIVE!: Part 2

Episode 191 of The Independent Characters has us doing a deep dive into the ideas, fiction, fact, and fantasy that spawned the lore of Warhammer 40,000. If you hate long episodes, this one might not be for you as it is over 4 hours of content. But that's what the timestamps below are for!

Then we leap into the main topic of the show for about an hour and a half of solid conversation.

This is followed up by an interview with Kat and Caleb from CK Studios where we discuss the entry for the NOVA Open Charity Foundation. An amazing Warlord Titan assembled and painted by some of the best in the industry. Find out how it can be yours!

You may also notice fewer advertisements this episode. Thanks to our Patreon we are dropping most advertisers with two exceptions as we move forward. Tablewar and soon, Miniwargaming. We hope you enjoy the show.

Episode 190 of The Independent Characters has a return to our Show of Force series - and this time it's all about The Insidious Curse... We take a deep dive into the horror that is The Genestealer Cults!

To help us out with this, we have brought in our resident Genestealer Cult player, new guest host, new member to our gaming group, AND new 40k Player (since January!), Matt Bruner! He is a long time friend of Jodys and we think you will love him as much as we do! We kick off the show getting to know Matt, then launch into a lengthy hobby progress and games played section with Jody talking a little bit about his experience at the Boise GT. You can hear even more about that on the Splintermind Podcast (link below).

Then it's time to launch into our coverage of The Genestealer Cults. What an amazing army this is! While the concept isn't new, the army IS, and you will hear all about it here.

Finally we have a short interview with Facebook Group fan-favorite Jeremy Wood. If you aren't a member of the group, you are really missing out on some incredibly work Jeremy does with his dioramas.

Then it's time to say goodbye as we close out another episode. We hope you enjoy it. We couldn't figure out why it was taking so long to record... until I put it together and it is nearly four hours of content!

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro and Host Introduction
  • 0:16:30 - Workbench and Hobby Progress

Episode 189 of The Independent Characters sees us diving headfirst into the incredible game that is Adeptus Titanicus!

We include our usual Hobby Progress section and then spend the rest of the evening doing our best to tempt Jody into joining Josh, Carl, Austin (both of them), Thom and a couple others of our group to investing in and playing Adeptus Titanicus.

And to help Josh and I convince him we brought out the big guns! Specifically, we invited game designer James Hewitt for an interview. If you don't know what James has worked on here are a couple of tastes: Age of Sigmar, Silver Tower, Blitzbowl, and of course Adeptus Titanicus. We think you will love this interview!

We really hope you enjoy listening to the show as much as we enjoyed recording it!

Episode 186 of The Independent Characters is a deep dive into the Cities of Death rules. These can be found in the narrative section of Chapter Approved 2018 as well as a slightly expanded version in the rule book for the Urban Conquest campaign set. This episode clocks in at a more reasonable two and a half hours. Which is a nice change for us from the marathon recordings we’ve been doing lately.

Justin and Adan are back and we discuss what has been going on lately with about forty minutes of ‘Hobby Progress’. Carl also spends a little time describing The Somnium Stars Campaign which is launching for Legendary Level Patreon members in June!

Then we launch into the main topic - Exploring the Cities of Death. We will tell you why this is the best way to play Warhammer 40,000 ever! (Well maybe).

We really hope you enjoy the program!

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro and Host Introduction
  • 0:10:30 - Workbench and Hobby Progress
  • 1:00:00 - Cities of Death - Part 1
