Episode 135 of The Independent Characters is packed to the brim with great content!

After the usual Workbench and Games Played segment we launch into a discussion on Speed Painting. Justin and Jody talk about tips and techniques for getting your army on the table quickly. Then, to reinforce that point, we have an interview with Dave of Dave Paints. He is the commission painter that painted the infamous (because they are MORE than famous!) Chelledar to such a great standard.

You might think that's enough for an entire show. And other shows might only deliver that - but then we have an interview with the legendary Gav Thorpe about his recent novels and the upcoming Angels of Caliban Horus Heresy novel!

And just when you are thinking 'This couldn't possibly get any better.' There's more! Carl and Doug spend some time addressing the topic of prepping and assembling Forge World models. We hit this topic again and try to dispell many of the myths around it. Sandbeds are NOT required! We promise.

It has been a fun episode to produce and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it!

Episode 131 of The Independent Characters returns with two great topics!

After a large hobby progress and games played update we introduce our two guest hosts for our new segments. Doug (aka Replacement Geoff) is joined by Justin to discuss playing "Garage Style" games. What's the difference between this method and others? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages?

Then we get in the Boiler Room with Jason and talk about Basic Hobby Tools. The topic only sounds dry on paper though - as we go into where you can get these kinds of tools and what things to look out for.

We are hoping to put out one more episode before our upcoming trip to the UK for Salute and Warhammer World, but it may not happen. Either way we will keep you aware of what is going on through our Facebook page and website. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 130 - Paint Choices and Oil Washes

Episode 130 of The Independent Characters continues our return to the Podcast by covering two topics that we find interesting.

First we discuss the process and benefits of doing oil washes. We get Josh on to explain how they are done, why they are done, and what the benefits of doing them are.

Next up is a discussion between Justin and Jody all about the various types of paints avaiable to hobbiests. What the benefits and drawbacks of each type are, and under what circumstances do you want to use one over another! This is typically a hotly debated topic amongst people in our hobby, so while our opinions may or may not line up with yours, we felt it was worth taking the time to discuss.

Of course we have Adan and Justin joining us for the Hobby Progress and Games played segments. So hopefully you enjoy what we have been up to.

We hope you enjoy the show and don't feel like you are listening to paint dry!

Episode 129 of The Independent Characters marks our return to the microphone after a six month hiatus with Carl, Adan, and Justin. Carl was apparently the only one that wasn't aware we were returning. You will hear all about the reasons for the return and how we have changed our format slightly to ensure quality family and gaming time!

After a massive hobby progress and games played update we introduce two new guest hosts for our new segments. Doug (aka Replacement Geoff) is joined by Zach (no not THAT Zach - A NEW one!) to review Fantasy Flight Games Forbidden Stars as well as talk about Faultline 40k, a new gaming club in the Bay Area that emphasizes painting, playing and the narrative approach to gaming.

We take some time to talk about what the plans are for Faultline 40k, where they are heading and how you can get involved if you are local to the scene here. Even if you aren't a local to the Bay Area, you may find the discussion inspirational and packed with some good advice.

We are happy to be back in the saddle. In some ways it feels like we never left. Thanks for all of your continued support while we were on break! It's because of the supportive comments from our awesome community that we have returned. (at least in part). Also thank you to Doug and Zach for helping out with this episode. We hope you enjoy!

Normally we wouldn't release an episode this long, but this massive 5+ hour episode is bittersweet for us here as it is indeed the final episode of The Independent Characters. We want to thank every single one of you for listening to us over the last few years. It has been an incredible journey and we have enjoyed it tremendously.

127 may be a bit self indulgent as we check in with many of the guests that we have had on the show and find out where they are heading. We tried not to be too repetitive, but some of it cannot be helped when you conduct as many interviews as we have here.

We also add a few segments for our final episode that we hope you enjoy. Thank you once again for listening, providing feedback, and generally being the best friends we could have ever asked for. Good gaming!

I would also like to just take a moment to thank all of our sponsors over the years. KR Multicase, Secret Weapon Miniatures, Smells like Wargaming, and Wargamma. We made a promise not to advertise products that we wouldn't use ourselves - and these guys provide some of the best on the market. Please do go check them out and at least give them a look, as the show would not have been possible without their support.

Farewell!

Episode 120 of The Independent Characters clocks in at almost three hours to make up for the last short episode.

Carl is joined by Jason Mullins of The Overlords Podcast as well as Michael Dunsmore from our local gaming group for a lengthy discussion about how to get involved with Horus Heresy Gaming (also known as 30k).

We take some time to talk about some of the fundamentals of 30k and what our approaches were to getting into it.

We have a pretty lengthy hobby progress and games played segment this episode - which as it so happens, coincides with the overall theme. We talk about some of our 30k games played in the last couple of weeks and some things we have learned. On top of that Aaron shows up to surprise Carl with a going away gift, the likes of which he could not believe. Thank you so very much for all those who contributed and who listen to the show.

As it turns out, we now have a copy of Imperial Armour: The Siege of Vraks in hand, and it is virtually impossible for us to end the show without covering that one... so we have extended the show another episode before we close the door. Our suspicion is that Horus Heresy Book 5 is going to release before the end as well... so we MAY end up extending it even another episode... we shall see!

Episode 118 of The Independent Characters is our long awaited Show of Force: The Angels of Death!

Carl, Adan and Justin spend some time discussing their Hobby Progress and Games Played before we move into the meat of the show.

You may or may not realize it, but The Space Marines are a pretty large part of Warhammer 40k (who are we kidding? You know that!), and so this Show of Force takes quite a bit of time to go through. Even with the length of this episode, we are still only scratching the surface of the most popular army in Galaxy!

Additionally we get none other than Douglas Johnson of Tablewar fame to join us, and talk briefly about the Tablewar offerings. That's great and all, but you may not realize Doug is also an incredibly accomplished Warhammer 40k Tournament player, with multiple GT's under his belt and several appearances in the Top 16 at the Adepticon finals. Doug also happens to be a huge fan of Space Marines and spends some time with us talking about them in competition.

With only five remaining episodes of The Independet Characters, we plan to make the best of them! We hope you enjoy this one.

In Episode 110 of The Independent Characters we talk about the process of building missions in Warhammer 40k. Whether you want to create (or leverage!) the ultimate 40k Tournament Missions, or make a really exciting and fun narrative mission for your event or friends, this is the episode you want to listen to

We enlist aid from some of the best in the tournament scene at the moment to delve into their different (but somewhat similar) philosophies on mission design and what makes for a balanced experience. Reece Robbins (of The Las Vegas Open and Frontline Gaming) and Mike Brandt (of the NOVA Open and NOVA Open Charitable Foundatin) both join us to give us some insight into how the missions for their respective events were developed.

As usual we have our Hobby Progress and games played, which is quite extensive as we participated in a few events over this period of time!

That's not enough you say!? Ok then - how about we throw in a long interview with none other than Black Library author, and probably secret Chaos agent, Aaron Dembski-Bowden for good measure!? This is an amazing interview with insight into many things Black Library and his latest novel The Talon of Horus (on sale now!) without any spoilers.

Episode 108 - Show of Force: The Greater Good

Episode 108 of The Independent Characters is all about The Tau! We cover it with our patented (not really) Show of Force approach. This time it's Show of Force: The Greater Good. We talk about everything Tau, from the history and details of the race, their reliance on futuristic technology and weaponry. We go inside the background, rules, supplements and excitement of the youngest race in the Warhammer 40k Universe!

We will discuss our experiences playing the Tau and how they perform on the tabletop in comparison to their backstory. To help us through all of this, we have brought in Jason McCurry of our local gaming group. Tau were his first army, and although he isn't actively playing them right now, he helps walk us through the confusion of marker drones, and ethereals!

Additionally, as recommended by Reece Robbins, we have Israel Sanchez to walk us through playing Tau in the competetive environment.

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 106 has us barely standing the heat in The Boiler Room. The Air Conditioning at the studio is broken and things get pretty hot. You can tell we start losing our minds. However, before we do we spend some time discussing Hobby Progress and swapping armies.

We also include a discussion Justin and Carl had with Chelle, Carl's wife, about her Eldar (The Chelledar) from Dave Paints. We talk about how she has gotten into 40k, what appeals to her about it, and Justin offers her some advice on playing. This was originally intended to be released as bonus content while Carl was on vacation, but we held on to it until now.

Last but not least, we have a Warrior Lodge segment with Aaron, Bryce and Jason. We discuss our impressions of 7th edition now and talk about specific changes to the game.

We hope you enjoy Episode 106!

As usual we have an extensive Hobby Progress and Games Played segment, which has Josh, our resident Demons expert joining us as well.

Episode 103 - Dataslate: Technology and 40k

Episode 103 is a new format for shows, in which we cover topics that are perhaps not lengthy enough to warrant an episode entirely on their own, but can be strung together into several segments. We refer to these as Dataslate episodes.

In this episode we have a discussion of the use of Technology and 40k. From Facebook, Blogs, to apps and tablets. We discuss how we have used these various pieces to improve our gaming experiences. We then have a short review of Games Workshops Altar of War book.

We follow all of that up with two interviews. One with Dave of Dave Paints. This is the commission painter who has painted Carls wifes Eldar. (The Chelledar) The other interview is with Reece Robbins as we discuss the upcoming Bay Area Open. This has some significant changes and news recently. So if you are interested in going, you aren't going to want to miss this.

Of course we have our usual Hobby Progress in which we have... actual Hobby Progress!

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 102 of The Independent Characters has us returning to our coverage of Horus Heresy 3: Massacre for our second part of the two part coverage.

First Geoff returns to talk about Hobby Progress and games played with Carl. We will see how that has gone. We also touch slightly on 7th Edition here and our initial impressions. But that's not what this show is about...

We spend time discussing the mechanics of the Legions represented in this book as well as an overview of the Titan Legions involved and the Mechanicus forces.

Then we leap over to discuss the two (yes we said two!) different campaign styles of play that are in this book. Anything that has us playing the game in different ways strikes our interest and this is no exception!

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 101 of The Independent Characters focuses on Forge Worlds latest release, Horus Heresy 3: Extermination! This is part one of our two part coverage of the latest amazing book, and conclusion of the Istvaan Trilogy.

In this episode, we go into depth about the lore surrounding Horus Heresy 3. This includes what happens immediately after the events of Massacre and other actions that take place in the neighboring systems. We then discuss the four Space Marine Legions represented in this book. Talking about their history, their disposition of forces during the Horus Heresy and some eximplary battles they have taken part in.

Geoff joins Carl for this episode and we will find out if he has completed any hobby progress in the intervening time since Episode 100 as well...

We also have an interview with Justin Tan of Arcane Factories about their Kickstarter project which is halfway through its cycle at the time of this release. For some reason audio quality for calls to Canada really suffers when doing these Skype calls. So we have tried to clean it up as much as possible. Please bear with the audio here as Justin has some information which may be of interest to 40k player, and in particular Sisters of Battle players!

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Episode 99 - Show of Force: The Unforgiven

Episode 99 of The Independent Characters focuses on our second "Show of Force" episode. This time we are discussing The Unforgiven. We go into great detail about many aspects of the Dark Angels army and how Games Workshop supports them.

We have taken feedback from our previous Show of Force episode and tried to incorporate some of that into this episode as well. Even taking all of that into account - we realize some things we can do to improve this format even further for the next time!

We want to thank Ken Fritts for joining us for this episode, his knowledge and insight into The Dark Angels was very helpful and we couldn't have done it without him. Additionally, we owe a big thank you to Gav Thorpe, who took time out of his busy schedule (and even put up with our missed appointment quite graciously!) to talk to us about his Legacy of Caliban series, and a look at The Dark Angels through a Black Library authors eyes.

The epsiode starts off with a huge amount of Hobby Progress. Well, since we include purchases in our "Hobby Progress" we think you can see where this may be going...

Either way, we hope you enjoy Episode 99 of The Independent Characters!

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro and feedback from Ep97

I had some time to sit down with Dave Taylor of Dave Taylor Miniatures and discuss his new business as well as spend some time talking to him about his, very different, approach to assembling large Forge World Models!

I think Dave does a great job of de-mystifying these models, and provides some amazing advice.

I really wanted to thank Dave for taking the time to sit down and talk with me at Adepticon. He's a very busy guy!

Please forgive the sound quality here - I did my best to clean it up.

Episode 98 - Adepticon 2014 Preperation

Episode 98 of The Independent Characters has the return of Geoff! At least for this episode anyway...

We spend some time catching up with the former co-host of The Independent Characters, talk a little about the feedback from Episode 97, and then launch into our discussion of Adepticon 2014 and what we are doing to prepare for this magnificent event!

We also take some time to speak with Matt Weeks, one of the primary organizers of Adepticon, before we come full circle and have a conversation with a couple of our friends who will be attending with us this year.

Adepticon is always a lot of fun and we highly encourage you to make the trip out to Chicago at some point if you aren't already.

Not only is this episode slightly delayed, but we also apparently ran into several sound issues. I have done my best to clean them up a bit. Our apologies about that.

We hope you enjoy Episode 98 of The Independent Characters.

Episode 97 - Extreme Forge World Modeling

Episode 97 was supposed to be about how assembling large Forge World models is really not as difficult as you think it might be. However, occasionally a show goes in a direction you didn't expect. What we ended up with is a deep dive into the world of Extreme Model Building!

Tim has a background in assembling model cars and trains, but his love of assembling complicated projects has now moved over into the Forge World arena. He is the individual responsible for the incredible assembly work done on Carls Titan and Thunderhawk.

We thought bringing Tim on the show would show people how they shouldn't be intimidated by these large (and expensive) models, however we didn't quite know what we were in for. We think however, you will find some great ideas in this episode and will gain an appreciation for just how passionate some people are about this hobby!

In addition to our regular Workbench and Tabletop discussion, we also present you with The Warrior Lodge #10. Joining us this time around are Ian (aka Crimson Fist Ian), Jason, and Josh (aka Santa Cruz Josh) to tackle a number of topics we have gathered for you.

Last, but not least, we have a quick interview with Teras of Geek Nation Tours. He comes on to talk about Warhammer World (You might have heard Carl went there) and how he can help you get there soon! Sometimes you have to just sit back and enjoy the journey, not necessarily the destination! We hope you enjoy Episode 97 of The Independent Characters.

Episode 96 - Show of Force: Veterans of The Long War

Episode 96 of The Independent Characters introduces our new special named Show of Force. This Episode Show of Force covers the Veterans of The Long War. We go into depth about the forces of the Chaos Space Marines. From Where they come from, what their objectives are, some of our favorite units, the models, the support from Forge World and Black Library... we attempt to answer the question "Why should you collect this army?".

To help us out we bring in John French, Black Library author of Ahriman: Exile (and the upcoming Ahriman: Sorcerer) to help us understand this complex villain and the nature of Chaos itself. Additionally, we have input from Alan Dehesa, a tournament Chaos Space Marine player who has placed well at some of the most challenging events around, to give us some insight into how he makes this army perform.

We have the usual Workbench and Games Played segments, but of course the real "meat" of this episode is our coverage. This is our first such episode and we are very interested in your feedback before we move into the next one (3 to 4 episodes from now).

We hope you enjoy Episode 96!

Episode 95 - Gaming Clubs

Episode 95 of The Independent Characters takes a broad look at Wargaming Clubs. Are they useful? How do you find one? How do you join one? And more importantly how do you go about starting one?

To help us with this discussion, since we really knew very little about it to start, Adan has done some research on local Gaming Clubs to us as well as discovered some of the history of a club he belongs to, The 40k Fight Club. In addition, we have conducted interviews from around the world to give us a bit of a global perspective on the scene.

As usual, we have our Workbench and Games Played segments.

Episode 94 - Commission Painting: The Full Service

Episode 94 of The Independent Characters takes a hard look at Commission Painting. Whether you are thinking of having a model or army painted by a commission painter or painting service, or whether you think you have the chops to become a commission painter yourself, we discuss the pitfalls you want to avoid as well as the benefits.

To help us round out our conversation, we also have interviews with Branden from Smells Like Wargaming and Frankie from Frontline Gaming. These are two distinctively different approaches to Commission Painting services and we ask them about how they do business and what others should look for.

As usual, we have our Workbench and Games Played segments where we delve a bit into Tyranids as well.

Next episode we promise to present you with a brand spanking new commercial for Secret Weapon Miniatures as well as Smells Like Wargaming. So finally people can stop teasing Carl about not having recently attended a class by Mr. Justin!

Episode 92 - IA:2 and The Assault on Escalation

Episode 92 is our final show of 2013 for The Independent Characters. We wrap up the year talking at length about Escalation and Stronghold Assault. In particular we discuss the communities reactions to these two supplements and how we are treating them here in our community.

In additon to that, we have a copy of Imperial Armour 2 (Second Edition): War Machines of The Adeptus Astartes. This is Andy Hoares first IA book since returning to Games Workshop. Episode 90 - Horus Heresy: Massacre - Part One
Episode 90 of The Independent Characters takes a very close look at Forge Worlds latest release, Horus Heresy 2: Massacre! As with the previous entry in this series, the tome is so massive we need two episodes to cover it all. Part one of our coverage will be taking a look at the story that has brought us to this point in The Great Betrayal so far, as well as in depth coverage of the four Adeptus Astartes Legions covered in the book. Namely, The Salamanders, The Word Bearers, The Iron Hands and The Night Lords.

Word of Horus’ treachery escapes Isstvan III and now the Legions loyal to the Emperor mobilise to make Horus and those who follow account for their crimes. However the depth of the betrayal is yet to be revealed.

Aside from our usual Workbench and Games Played segments, we have an interview with Reece Robbins to discuss The Las Vegas Open Tournament as well as his Kickstarter with Tablewar called The MegaMat!

Episode 89 - The Extended Warrior Lodge

Episode 89 was supposed to be part one of our two part Horus Heresy 2: Massacre coverage, but due to a delay in receiving the copy of the book, we have had to fill some time. Rather than make you wait for this episode, we had some guests come on the show and do an extended Warrior Lodge segment, which includes some prizes for people who have left iTunes reviews towards the end there!

Of course we cover hobby progress and (lack of) games played. Last but not least, Carl gives us an editorial on healthy relationships and how they intersect with your 40k gaming.

It’s a short episode this time around, clocking in at just about two hours. But our Horus Heresy 2 coverage will begin with episode 90 in two weeks!

Time Stamps:

  • 0:00:00 – Show Intro
  • 0:07:00 – Workbench and Games Played
  • 0:44:00 – The Warrior Lodge
  • 1:53:20 – Editorial, Final Thoughts and Show closing

Episode 88 - Battlefleet Gothic

Episode 88 of The Independent Characters is all about Battlefleet Gothic. While all of the specialist games by Games Workshop have been cancelled, we have had this on our schedule to talk about for quite some time. So now that it has been cancelled, we figure why not talk about it!?

We have played a bit of Battlefleet Gothic lately, and while we are no experts at it, we are happy to share our experiences and talk about some of the ins and outs of the game.

As usual, we talk hobby progress and games played. But in addition to that, Geoff has a very important announcement at the beginning of the show that all our listeners should hear.

We hope you enjoy!

Time Stamps:

  • 0:00:00 – Show Intro and Special Message
  • 0:18:20 – Workbench and Games Played
  • 0:59:30 – Battlefleet Gothic: Part 1
  • 1:46:30 – Battlefleet Gothic: Part 2

Episode 87 – Apocalypse Redux

Episode 87 of The Independent Characters has us revisiting Apocalypse! Now that 6th Edition has come about and the new version of Apocalypse has been released we take a look at how it actually plays. To help us do so, we are having one of the most experienced players and GM’s of Apocalypse in Northern California! Anthony runs Norcon and regularly plays Apocalypse as one of his preferred methods of 40k. He and his group (The G3 Group) have tons of experience with massive games.

We spend quite a bit of time talking about the rules changes for this new version and the Fires of Sidonia Apocalypse game some of us participated in at Endgame Oakland a few weekends ago.

In addition to that, we finally release our Forbidden Lore Segment for Death of Integrity with Guy Haley!

But wait, there’s more! Even with all of that, we have a new edition of The Warrior Lodge, with a whole new host of topics to discuss. This episode is not only about Apocalypse, but it is Apocalypse sized!

We hope you enjoy!

Time stamps:

  • 0:00:00 – Show Intro
  • 0:15:30 – Workbench and Games Played
  • 1:20:20 – Apocalypse Redux
  • 2:12:50 – The Warrior Lodge

Episode 86 - Double Force Org

Episode 86 of The Independent Characters is full of some great hobby content. With Geoff on holiday, we have Justin stepping in to talk about hobby progress and games played. A recent games-day at Carls house led to plethora of games being played we can talk about!

The main topic of the show focuses a discussion around the much maligned Double Force Org. We talk about our experiences and thoughts about it and whether it deserves the negative reputation it has been given.

Additionally, we were lucky enough to have both Jason and Jon from The Overlords Podcast while they were out here in California visiting. We took Jon on a tour of the local game stores and then Carl has a discussion with them in which we focus on the differences and observations between US Gaming (or at least California!) and gaming in the UK.

We had originally intended to have our Forbidden Lore with Guy Haley this episode, but we are moving that to Episode 87 due to a scheduling conflict. We know you were waiting for it, so were we. But it will be available soon!

Time Stamps

  • 0:00:00 - Show Intro
  • 0:14:25 - Workbench and Games Played
  • 0:55:05 - Double Force Org
  • 1:26:30 - The Overlords visit The Boiler Room
  • 2:16:00 - Show Closing and Final Thoughts
